Here's a great marker of a cultural divide: ask someone who they think of first when they hear the name "Selena." You wouldn't be wrong if Selena Gomez came to mind first and foremost — she is the most-followed person on Instagram, after all — but for millions of fans, the name belongs to Selena Quintanilla, the Tejana icon who was tragically killed in 1995. Selena Gomez might agree — she was named after the singer, after all.

She recently opened up about her namesake, telling Sacramento's NOW 100.5 in a phone-in interview that, “My dad and mom were huge fans. My name was going to be Priscilla, but my cousin actually took the name when she was born six months before me. They actually loved [Selena’s] music, so they just named me after her."

Both Selenas were born and grew up in Texas — Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson, and Gomez in Grand Prairie. "I grew up and I went to her grave," Selena Gomez says about the Mexican-American superstar. "I got to go to her house. It was really crazy. And then when I started working, I remember I got to meet her family and I just got super emotional 'cause it’s so crazy to see how far everything... I don’t know where she’d be right now. It’s nuts.”
